Intel and Nokia researching 3D UI and holograms for cellphones

Chip maker Intel and cellphone leader Nokia have come together to create the first joint laboratory to focus on researching futuristic technologies for mobile devices, like 3D holographic displays for cellphones. The Intel and Nokia Joint Innovation Center, as they call it, opened on Tuesday in co-operation with the University of Oulu in Finland, Europe.
The lab will initially employ “about two dozen R&D professionals,” Intel wrote in a statement, stressing the need to research tech like 3G holographic displays for mobile devices, “a capability only found in science fiction movies today,” and user interfaces that mimic real-world interactions to enable “natural and intuitive” experiences.
3D holographic research should particularly benefit from the Oulu research community’s 3D interface expertise. The technology will enable future smartphones to display a 3D hologram of a person. The MeeGo operating system, another Intel-Nokia collaboration, is well suited to power the user interface the two partners have in mind. True to their open source mantra, the companies said that much of the lab’s research activity will also be open source.

Christian’s Opinion

This is an exciting development because hologram tech has been coming along at a snail’s pace. The problem with it is that it takes years of research and tons of money with absolutely no guarantee of success. Both Nokia and Intel are big spenders in the R&D game. Nokia is the biggest R&D spender in Europe, pouring $7.6 billion, or 12 percent of its $50.7 billion in 2009 annual revenue, into its R&D department that consists of almost one in three of its employees.
Intel spent $4.1 billion on R&D in the first nine months of last year. The fact that two industry heavyweights have joined forces on research doesn’t mean your next Nokia device will sport a 3D holographic display, but it certainly helps move the tech forward.

IBM’s million dollar CPU is the fastest in the world


Except for the true chip maven, computer processors always seem to have the feeling of sameness to them. But IBM’s just got us excited about CPU architectures again: at the Hot Chips 2010 conference, IBM announced their upcoming z196 CPU, which is really, really fast.
How fast? Let’s talk “fastest chip in the world.”
Intended for Z-series mainframe computers, the Z196 has a clock speed of 5.2GHz. Measuring just 512 square millimeters, the Z196 is fabricated on 45nm PD SOI technology, and on its surface contains almost one and a half billion transistors. Otherwise, it features a 64KB Level 1 instruction cache, 1.5MB of private L2 cache per core, a 128K Level 1 data cache and even a pair of co-processors dedicated to doing cryptographic work.
Whew. Blistering. Better, IBM says this puppy is ready to be let off the leash: they’re getting ready to ship the processor sometime in September.
Ah yes, computer builders, I can see the drool collecting in your mouth. But you might want to hold on a second before you get too excited: the Z196 is probably outside of your computer budget. IBM’s saying the chip will costs hundreds of thousands of dollars, and might even reach a million bucks per unit.
Hmm. Maybe that would be worth it… depending on how much it overclocks.

Wine Runs Windows Applications

How it Works?

The goal of the Wine project is to develop a "translation layer" for Linux and other POSIX compatible operating systems that enables users to run native Microsoft Windows applications on those operating systems.

This translation layer is a software package that "emulates" the Microsoft Windows API (Application Programming Interface), but the developers emphasize that it is not an emulator in the sense that it adds an extra software layer on top of the native operating system, which would add memory and computation overhead and negatively affect performance.
Instead Wine provides alternative DDLs (Dynamic Link Libraries) that are needed to run the applications. These are native software components that, depending on their implementation, can be just as efficient or more efficient than their Windows counterparts. That is why some MS Windows applications run faster on Linux than on Windows.
The Wine development team has made significant progress towards achieving the goal to enable users to run Windows programs on Linux. One way to measure that progress is to count the number of programs that have been tested. The Wine Application Database currently contains more than 8500 entries. Not all of them work perfectly, but most commonly used Windows Applications run quite well, such as the following software packages and games: Microsoft Office 97, 2000, 2003, and XP, Microsoft Outlook, Microsoft Internet Explorer, Microsoft Project, Microsoft Visio, Adobe Photoshop, Quicken, Quicktime, iTunes, Windows Media Player 6.4, Lotus Notes 5.0 and 6.5.1, Silkroad Online 1.x, Half-Life 2 Retail, Half-Life Counter-Strike 1.6, and Battlefield 1942 1.6.
After installing Wine, Windows applications can be installed by placing the CD in the CD drive, opening a shell window, navigating to the CD directory containing the installation executable, and entering "wine setup.exe", if setup.exe is the installation program.
When executing programs in Wine, the user can choose between the "desktop-in-a-box" mode and mixable windows. Wine supports both DirectX and OpenGL games. Support for Direct3D is limited. There is also a Wine API that allows programmers to write software that runs is source and binary compatible with Win32 code. For more information on Wine's features, see here.
The project was started in 1993 with to objective to run Windows 3.1 programs on Linux. Subsequently, versions for other Unix operating systems have been developed. The original coordinator of the project, Bob Amstadt, handed the project over to Alexandre Julliard a year later. Alexandre has been leading the development efforts ever since.

KDE SC 4.5 Available

The latest version of KDE SC (Software Compilation) incorporates wide-ranging improvements and udpates. This includes some 16,000 bug fixes, which gives you idea of the size of the project, a new applications caching system "KShareDataCache" for increased performance, and JavaScript templates for more flexible Plasma Workspace configuration.

KDE and Gnome are the two most popular Linux desktop environments. Most Linux distributions allow the user to choose which desktop environment to use. They are free and open source alternatives to Microsoft's Windows. For more information about the latest KDE release see the official announcement.

The KDE Plasma Workspaces 4.5.0 10th August, 2010. KDE  releases the Plasma Desktop and Plasma Netbook Workspaces 4.5.0. Plasma Desktop received many usability refinements. The Notification and Job handling workflows have been streamlined. The KDE Applications 4.5.0 10th August, 2010. The KDE team  releases a new version of the KDE Applications. Many educational titles, tools, games and graphical utilities have seen further enhancement and usability improvements. Routing backed by OpenRouteService has made its entry in Marble, the virtual globe. KDE encourages everybody to spread the word on the Social Web. Submit stories to news sites, use channels like delicious, digg, reddit, twitter, identi.ca. Upload screenshots to services like Facebook, Flickr, ipernity and Picasa and post them to appropriate groups. Create screencasts and upload them to YouTube, Blip.tv, Vimeo and others. Running Windows Programs

We have several options for running Windows-only programs in Ubuntu. For some reason we used one of these :

  1. Find Linux equivalents for those programs.
  2. Run the native Windows program using Wine.
  3. Run the native Windows program using Crossover Office8 or Cedega.9
  4. Dual boot.
  5. Run an emulator.
For the first one, you can usually find some good guides if you do a Google search
for the keywords linux equivalents windows programs.
The third you'll have to pay for, but I hear good things about these programs.
I don't know how to do the fifth, and I've already provided a link to the fourth.
A bit about Wine... I don't know how it works, but it does seem to work with a lot
of simple Windows programs. I'll show you how I get Filezilla to work in Linux, as
an example.

Assuming I've already enabled extra repositories, first, I install Wine:

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install wine

Then, I download the setup.exe file for Filezilla. When I double-click on it, Wine will
try to open the file. Then, the installer appears, just as if I were using Windows.
Instead of installing Filezilla to C:\Program Files\Filezilla\, I'm going to override the
default installation location and install it to
z:\home\username\.wine\drive_c\Program Files\Filezilla. For some reason, z:\ is
what Wine calls my Ubuntu partition.
Then, I set up a launcher (on the panel or in the menu) for the command wine
“z:\home\username\.wine\drive_c\Program Files\Filezilla\Filezilla.exe”
That's it. Now when I click on that launcher, Filezilla will load up.
If a Windows program does not work with Wine, you may need Crossover Office.
Cedega is a special version of Wine that's made for Windows-only games.
