The Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT or Monbukagakusho) Scholarship Information

A scholarship is something that is much sought after by students in continuing learning program at a higher level. Then how to get scholarships, here it is information relating to scholarships in Japan for students from the United.

The Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT or Monbukagakusho) offers scholarships each year to assist students who are interested in enrolling in Japanese universities. As of the 2015 Japanese academic year, some 102,000 students from approximately 160 countries and regions around the world have studied in Japan under the Japanese Government (Monbukagakusho) Scholarship program established in 1954. As of May 1, 2015, there were 9,223 foreign students studying in Japan as Japanese government scholarship students.

Application requirements and processes vary by location. Application materials must be submitted to the Embassy or Consulate General of Japan which oversees your jurisdiction (see below for a list of US locations).

There are four types of MEXT Scholarships awarded to U.S. citizens:

  • Research Student Scholarship

  • Applicants must be under 35 years of age and a college graduate or have completed 16 years of schooling in order to be eligible.  Individuals who have not yet graduated at the time of application must receive their degree before the date of departure for Japan as a scholarship recipient.


  • Undergraduate Student Scholarship

  • Applicants must be between 17 and 22 years of age and have completed 12 years of education or have completed courses in a school comparable to a high school.  Individuals who have not yet graduated at the time of application must receive their high school diploma before the date of departure for Japan as a scholarship recipient.

  • Specialized Training College Student Scholarship

  • Applicants must be between 17 and 22 years of age and have completed 12 years of education or have completed school education comparable to a Japanese high school.  Individuals who have not yet graduated at the time of application must receive their high school diploma before the date of departure for Japan as a scholarship recipient.

  • Japanese Studies Scholarship

  • Applicants must be between 18 to 30 years of age.  They must be enrolled as undergraduate students in institutions outside of Japan prior to being a scholarship recipient and they must return to this home institution upon completion of the MEXT scholarship.  Individuals applying for this scholarship must be enrolled in a major in Japanese language and/or Japanese culture. Students enrolled in a major other than Japanese language or Japanese culture, who wish to study particular aspects of Japan (engineering, economy, agriculture, architecture, art, etc.) as part of their major studies, should apply to JASSO for admission to the Short-term Student Exchange Promotion Program.

Please note, you must be a U.S. citizen to apply through an Embassy or Consulate General of Japan in the United States.

Study Abroad Scholarship in Japan 2016

The Bridging Project offers scholarships to American undergraduate students participating in study-abroad programs in Japan. Funding from private
foundations and major U.S. corporations, through donations to the nonprofit US-Japan Bridging Foundation, makes it possible to award about 100

scholarships each year to assist students with the travel and living expenses they will incur while studying abroad in Japan for a semester or an
academic year. Applications are accepted twice a year for Bridging Scholarships.

Undergraduate students majoring in any field of study are eligible to apply for these scholarships. Japanese language study is not a
prerequisite.

A short essay (up to 500 words) introducing yourself, explaining your interest in study in Japan, and outlining what you hope to achieve by
participating in a study abroad program (three copies).

Bridging Scholarship recipients receive a stipend of $2,500 (for students on semester-long programs) or $4,000 (for students on academic year
programs). Students studying in Japan on summer programs are not eligible to apply.
