Nearly finished: Mozilla posts the second Firefox 3.6 release candidate

Mozilla has posted the second release candidate of Firefox 3.6 Sunday, just five days after the non-profit organization put forth the first release candidate. Such an accelerating pace of development indicates that Firefox 3.6 will be ready for prime time soon. This release packs no new features beyond a few under-the-hood tweaks and more than 70 bug fixes from the last beta to improve performance, stability, security, and features.
ozilla said Firefox 3.6 RC2 is considered to be stable and safe to use for daily web browsing, representing the features and content that will be in the final product release. This version is also faster and more responsive than previous versions, and has been optimized to run on small device operating systems such as Maemo. Firefox 3.6 RC2 is available in 70 languages and tested against the vast majority of Mozilla add-ons. The latter will be key when upgrading to the final release, especially remembering how add-on incompatibilities had plagued previous Firefox releases.

Even though it’s an incremental update, Firefox 3.6 will offer enough new features and technologies to keep users and developers happy.

Firefox 3.6 sports a lightweight theming engine dubbed Personas, a syncing add-on, improved plug-in management that warns you about expired plugins, new APIs enabling developers to write extensions that retrieve your geographical location, and more. It also supports the latest HTML5 specification, including the File API for local file handling, allowing web apps to access and manipulate local files without requiring you to upload them to the server first.

If you already have any previous beta of Firefox 3.6 installed on your system, the software should automatically update itself. You can also invoke the update check manually by choosing the “Check for Updates” from the Help menu. Users installing a fresh copy of Firefox 3.6 RC2 should download a standalone installers for Windows, Mac OS X, or Linux.

Lexicon takes $500 Oppo Blu-Ray player, sells it for $3,500

When you’re an electronics manufacturer and you have a gadget that just won’t sell. In this situation, you can do a few things: you can reach out to the community and try to drum up interest, you can launch an advertising campaign, or you can tweak the device into a new model and hope that the successor gadget will go over better. Or you can do what Lexicon did: buy up the stock of the sales-lagging gadget, rebrand it and add $3,000 to the price.
According to the sleuths over at Audioholics, that’s just what Lexicon did when they took the $500 Oppo BDP-83 and without changing a single feature or modifying the chassis, rebranded it as the $3,500 Lexicon BD-30, a THX-Certified Blu-Ray player.
According to Audioholics, “When we received the player the first thing we did was open it up to get a look at the inside. Imagine my surprise when I found that not only did the Lexicon share the same boards and transport as the Oppo – it was in fact AN OPPO BDP-83 PLAYER, CHASSIS AND ALL, SHOVED INSIDE AN ALUMINUM LEXICON WRAPPER. As far as we could determine, Lexicon didn’t change a single thing in terms of the hardware. Heck, they didn’t even lift the boards out of the chassis, opting instead to cut out the bottom of their own chassis to accommodate the venting locations, and putting a darker blue filter over the Oppo’s VFD display to give it a slightly deeper hue.”
Absolutely shameful and disgusting. Then again, if you’re willing to spend $3500 for a Blu-Ray player, you probably deserve to be burned.

Nautilus Wallpaper

Pengin cara mudah dalam mengganti wallpaper? Disini ada cara sederhana untuk dapat melakukannya di ubuntu. Cukup click kanan gambar dimaksud dan pilih "Set as Wallpaper..." maka dalam sekejab kita bisa melihat hasilnya. Gambar yang kita klik tadi berubah menjadi wallpaper desktop kita.

Caranya sederhana, di terminal ketikkan :

#sudo apt-get install nautilus-wallpaper

isikan password seperti biasa dan tunggu sampai proses instalasi selesai

Uji coba :
Untuk mencobanya, bukalah folder dimana terdapat file gambar, kemudian klik kanan pada gambar yang dimaksud. Apabila proses instalasi tadi berjalan sempurna maka disana akan muncul menu baru yaitu Set as Wallpaper. Pilihlah itu dan lihat hasilnya. Apabila belum keluar menu Set as Wallpaper, cobalah untuk merestart komputer dan ulangi proses uji coba tadi. ;)

HAITI NOW

Disaster and emergency experts warn that earthquake-ravaged Haiti is facing fresh tragedy as time becomes ever more crucial to rescue efforts.
They say most people killed in an earthquake die within the first 72 hours.

Rescue efforts in Haiti have been chaotic, hampered by a lack of resources and infrastructure, and emergency workers face a race against the clock to save those feared still trapped under rubble and to keep the injured and hungry alive.
Tens of thousands of people are feared dead and millions have been affected by the 7.0-magnitude quake that struck the impoverished Caribbean nation late Tuesday afternoon.
Aid has trickled into the battered capital, Port-au-Prince, where impassable roads, damaged docks and clogged airstrips slowed the arrival of critically needed assistance.
"We're working feverishly and aggressively to support and provide life-sustaining capability to the citizens of Haiti," Air Force Gen. Douglas Fraser told reporters. "They've suffered a great deal."
On Friday morning, the aircraft carrier USS Carl Vinson is to arrive in Haiti, carrying 19 helicopters and 30 pallets of relief goods, he said. The carrier will help relief workers get around Haiti's ruined and debris-choked roads "to get good where they need to be," Fraser said.
Within four days, 700 soldiers from the 82nd Airborne will be in the quake zone. By next Tuesday, three more ships carrying 2,200 Marines and heavy equipment will join them. By Saturday, about 5,000 to 6,000 men and women dedicated to supporting the relief effort will be in Haiti.

Bikin Swapfile Di Ubuntu

Menjalankan komputer dengan RAM yang mentok bisa bikin kita kurang nyaman, apalagi ketika bekerja dengan berbagai aplikasi yang membutuhkan jumlah RAM besar. Agh.. Kalau kita menggunakan linux tentu tidak asing dengan swap. Sebab ketika kita menginstallnya ke dalam komputer, disana kita sudah diminta untuk membuat partisi khusus untuk swap.

Apa artinya kita tidak dapat menambahkan swap lagi dalam sistem kita? Oh no.. disini saya pakai ubuntu 9.10. Kita masih bisa menambah swap dalam bentuk file swap. Untuk membuat file swap itu caranya adalah :

1. Masuk ke terminal
2. Gunakan hak administrator (su) #sudo su dan isikan password yang diminta
3. Misal kita bikin swapfile 1Gb #dd if=/dev/zero of=/swapfile1 bs=1024 count=1048576 (1048576 adalah perkalian dari 1024 x 1024 ). Perintah itu akan menghasilkan swapfile1 yang di cimpan di direktori root
4. Untuk menjadikan file swapfile1 menjadi file swap ketikkan perintah #mkswap /swapfile1
5. Aktifkan file tersebut menjadi fileswap dengan #swapon /swapfile1

Selesai, tapi hal itu hanya berlaku untuk sesi yang kita jalankan, ketika komputer kita restart maka tidak berlaku lagi. Untuk menjadikannya permanen, kita bisa mengedit file /etc/fstab dengan editor favorit kita. Misal gedit. #sudo gedit /etc/fstab dan tambahkan parameter berikut /swapfile1 swap swap defaults 0 0

Untuk mengeceknya, sebaiknya sebelum membuat fileswap, terlebih dulu kita cek besarnya swap dengan System Monitor ( System, Administration, System Monitor ). Kemudian cek kembali saat kita telah mengaktifkan swapfile tadi.
